Frequently asked questions about heating film
Heating film is electric infrared heating: built into the floor, ceiling or wall, it heats with radiant heat. Here you will find short, direct answers to 58 questions by topic, from how it works through consumption to warranty, with videos for several of them.
In brief
- Heating film is electric infrared heating: it warms surfaces and people rather than the air, and the warmth is felt within 5–15 minutes, depending on the floor covering.
- Under laminate and engineered wood flooring it goes without a solid layer; under vinyl, carpet and tiles with a 4–5 cm layer of concrete or Rigidur.
- The system costs HUF 11,250–18,000 per m² gross, installation included (Hungary).
- 15.5-year warranty on the 4th-generation heating film if we carry out the installation.
How does it work?
How does heating film work?
Heating film is electric infrared heating: when current flows, its carbon-paste surface gives off long-wave infrared radiation, which warms not the air but the floor, walls, furniture and people. These surfaces then give off heat themselves, much as the sun warms your body in summer. In detail: Infrared heating: how does it work?
What does heating film run on?
Heating film runs on electricity: it is electric infrared heating that converts all the electricity it draws into heat, so 1 kWh of electricity gives 1 kWh of heat. It contains no boiler, chimney, pipework or moving parts, so no gas connection is needed. Our customers often plan it together with solar panels, so that part of the heating's electricity is produced by themselves. Basics: what is infrared heating?
What is the difference between heating film and conventional heating?
Heating film warms surfaces by radiation, while conventional radiator or convector heating warms the air: warm air rises, layers of different temperature form in the room, and air movement also stirs up dust. With infrared heating there is no such air flow, and the same sense of warmth is reached at an air temperature 2–3 °C lower. Comparison: types of electric heating.
Heating film or radiator: which is better?
A radiator mainly warms the air, which rises, so it is warmer at head height than at the floor. Heating film warms the floor, objects and people by radiation: the warmth is more even, the difference between floor temperature and head-height temperature is smaller, and there is no air flow stirring up dust. There is no heater on the wall either, so the room can be furnished freely. In detail: electric underfloor heating.
What is the difference between an infrared panel and heating film?
Both infrared panels and heating film heat with radiant heat, but an infrared panel is a small, high-power device mounted on a wall or ceiling, very warm near it and less so further away; heating film is lower in power but lies over a large area behind the floor covering, so it gives even warmth across the whole room. In detail: infrared panel or heating film?
How long does heating film take to warm up?
Heating film reaches full power within a few minutes, and the warmth is felt within 5–15 minutes, depending on the floor covering, whether in the floor, wall, ceiling or built into concrete, because there is none of the warm-up inertia of a wet system. The thermal effect of the radiation is felt first by people and objects, after which the whole space warms up gradually. Underfloor heating: electric underfloor heating with heating film.
Why does infrared heating feel warmer?
Infrared heating warms surfaces, and because of the warm floor, walls and furniture the same sense of warmth is reached at an air temperature 2–3 °C lower than with a system that heats the air. According to an energy specialists' rule of thumb, every degree of difference means roughly 6% energy. Whether it is cheaper overall than gas heating is decided by energy prices and the building's heat loss. In detail: why does it feel warmer?
What does the warmth of infrared heating feel like, and does it make a sound?
The warmth of infrared heating is a radiant warmth similar to sunshine: it warms the body and objects, does not blow and creates no draught. Heating film has practically no sound, because it has no fan, pump or other moving part, a noticeable difference compared with heating with an air conditioner. Once installed it is not visible, and there is no heater on the wall. You can try it in the showroom: contact.
Where does the technology of infrared heating come from?
The basis of infrared heating, infrared radiation, was discovered by the astronomer William Herschel in 1800, and it began to be used for heating during the Second World War, mainly for heating military vehicles. Since then the technology has reached industrial halls, stables and the floors, walls and ceilings of family houses, and the generations of heating film have advanced in electrical safety and self-regulation. History: the history of infrared heating.
Can heating film be the only heating of a house?
Heating film can be the only heating of a house if the system is sized according to the building's heat loss. In a 2025 case study of our own, a new 97 m² house with a 5 kW solar array would have met the energy requirement for the occupancy permit with heating film alone; for a poorly insulated house we recommend insulation first. Wall heating and infrared panels are typically supplementary heating. Sizing: on-site survey.
How does heating film heat?
Heating film turns the surface of the floor, ceiling or wall into a heating surface. It neither blows nor circulates the air, but warms objects and people with radiant heat, on the same long wavelength at which the human body radiates.
That is why the room feels warm even at a cooler air temperature, and why there is no stirred-up dust.
What does good heating film look like?
What is the difference between heating film and "heating film" (fűtőfólia and fűtőfilm)?
None: the Hungarian words fűtőfólia and fűtőfilm both mean the same product. The two words are only a distributor's distinction, with no technical difference between them. The real difference is in the generations: whether the film is self-regulating (PTC), how the carbon paste contacts the copper strip, and how large the heat-emitting carbon-paste area is. The generations: the generations of heating film.
What does it mean that heating film is self-regulating (intelligent)?
Self-regulating (PTC) heating film, where furniture or a rug covers it and the heat cannot escape, reduces its own power, while continuing to heat unchanged on the free surfaces. As temperature rises, the resistance of the carbon paste rises, so the power drawn falls. The name "intelligent heating film" refers to this; the 3rd and the 4th generations are both self-regulating. More: what does self-regulation mean?
What is the difference between 3rd- and 4th-generation heating film?
The 4th-generation heating film gives off heat more evenly over a larger carbon-paste area, and a full-width contact strip runs between the copper strip and the carbon paste instead of the 3rd generation's mesh solution. Both are self-regulating, and furniture can go over both. In new installations we install the 4th-generation heating film today. Comparison table: 3rd-generation heating film, 4th-generation heating film.
How can good-quality heating film be recognised?
Good-quality heating film is distinguished not by the printed pattern but by the construction, the materials and the installation: look at the contact strip and the carbon-paste area, the price (web-shop films costing a few thousand forints fall into the weak category), the company's references and reviews, and who carries out the installation; with poor installation even good film can be dangerous. In detail: 4th-generation heating film.
What power of heating film is needed?
The power of the heating film is determined by the building's heat loss, not by the floor area. As a starting point, 110 W/m² is typical for a new, well-insulated house and 220 W/m² for a renovation, and the third level is 400 W/m². The film covers 60–70% of the floor area. The exact value, room by room, comes from the on-site survey and the heat-loss calculation. Your own estimate: infrared heating calculator.
Is every heating film infrared heating?
Not every film-shaped heater gives off radiant heat: some work predominantly by conduction. What goes over the film also matters: an aluminium-laminated impact-sound underlay, for example, reflects the radiation, and the heat then passes on only by conduction. So ask the distributor for an exact technical description, installation layer build and references. In detail: how does heat pass through the floor covering?
Where and how can it be installed?
What kind of house can heating film be installed in?
Heating film can be installed in practically any building, from the poorly insulated to the very well insulated, which is why we work with 110, 220 and 400 W/m² film: as a starting point, 110 W/m² is typical for a new, well-insulated house and 220 W/m² for a renovation. After the survey we design the power needed room by room, based on the building's heat loss. Survey: on-site survey.
Where can heating film be installed: floor, ceiling or wall?
Heating film can be installed in all three: as underfloor heating under the floor covering, as ceiling heating behind a plasterboard suspended ceiling, and as wall heating behind plasterboard or a wall covering. With a simple layer build, without a solid layer, laminate and engineered wood flooring can go over the film; under vinyl, carpet and tiles, 4–5 cm of concrete or Rigidur dry screed goes over the film. Layer builds: floor, ceiling, wall.
Under what floor coverings can heating film be installed?
Under laminate and engineered wood or solid wood flooring the heating film goes with a simple layer build, without a solid layer. Under vinyl, PVC, carpet, tiles and floor tiles, 4–5 cm of concrete or Rigidur dry screed is needed over the film; these coverings cannot go directly onto the film. An aluminium-laminated impact-sound underlay does not belong under any of these coverings, because it reflects the radiation. Layer builds: electric underfloor heating.
Can heating film be put under floor tiles (cold floor covering)?
Yes, heating film can also be installed under floor tiles and wall tiles, but the covering cannot be glued directly onto the film, because the radiation would dry out the adhesive. A solid, heat-storing layer, 4–5 cm of concrete or 1.5–2 cm of Rigidur dry screed, therefore goes over the film, and the tiler glues the tiles onto that. Thanks to the heating film's IP67 insulation, it can also go in a bathroom. Layer build: electric underfloor heating.
Can heating film go directly under laminate flooring?
Heating film can go directly under laminate flooring; this is the simplest underfloor-heating layer build: reflective foil, heating film, vapour barrier, earthing mesh, tissue-paper underlay, then the flooring, without a concrete or Rigidur layer. An aluminium-laminated impact-sound underlay should not go over the heating film, because it reflects the radiation; the floor covering's permitted temperature is held by a thermostat with a floor sensor. Floor coverings: Which floor covering suits underfloor heating?
Can I put furniture on the heated floor?
With self-regulating (3rd- and 4th-generation) heating film, yes: where the heat cannot escape, the film reduces its own power by about 25%, while that of the surfaces left free does not change. With non-self-regulating films made before 2015, a 4–5 cm air gap had to be left between the underside of furniture and the floor. We do not plan a heated surface under built-in furniture that reaches the floor. More: the self-regulating film.
Can heating film go in a bathroom?
Heating film can also go in a bathroom, because its insulation is IP67, and we always fit it with an earthing mesh. Under tiles, 4–5 cm of concrete or Rigidur dry screed goes over the film, and the tiler glues onto that. No heated surface goes under a bath, shower tray or built-in furniture. If you only want to heat the bathroom as a retrofit, the thin heating mesh can be laid in the tile adhesive. Heating mesh: heating mats and heating mesh.
Can heating film be installed retrospectively?
Heating film can be installed retrospectively, because it needs no pipework, manifold or thick screed. If the floor covering is being replaced anyway, the film goes on the existing level subfloor. If you do not want to touch the floor, the ceiling is the obvious choice: the film goes above the new plasterboard suspended ceiling, without demolition or a difference in level; and the wall is good for supplementary heating. Ceiling: ceiling heating.
Can I install the heating film myself?
We do not recommend installing heating film yourself: a qualified installer should install it, because professional installation is the condition of safety and long life, and with poor installation even good film can be dangerous. After connection, a protective-earthing inspection and record are mandatory. 15.5-year warranty on the 4th-generation heating film if we carry out the installation. Installation: how we install heating film.
Who connects the heating film, and is a permit needed?
The electrical connection of the heating film is made by a qualified electrician, who also issues the protective-earthing record; in an existing house this is the mandatory step, and no separate permit is needed. If a connection above 32 A is needed, the increase in capacity must be arranged with the electricity provider. We carry out the survey, installation of the film and commissioning; we measure and record every section. Preparation: before infrared heating installation.
How long does heating film installation take?
In the great majority of cases, installing heating film takes one day: the installation of an average 150 m² family house is usually finished in a day. With plasterboard or a warm floor covering one visit is enough, with concreting two, the second 3–4 weeks after the concrete is poured; the exact schedule is recorded in the technical proposal. Step by step: how we install heating film.
How much insulation is needed under heating film?
A heated floor needs walkable thermal insulation: we recommend 10–15 cm thick EPS, XPS or rock wool, because without insulation underfloor heating loses heat towards the ground. In the heating-film system, 5 mm reflective foil with full coverage goes on the insulation, reflecting the heat upwards; the reflective foil, the film and the vapour barrier together are 6 mm. In detail: insulation for underfloor heating.
Healthy and safe?
Is there electrosmog above heating film?
According to our own measurement (KMOON GM3120), the electric field above heating film is a fraction of the public exposure limit: 345 V/m on the film's surface, 273 V/m under a 2 cm Rigidur board and 0 V/m at 20 cm height, against a limit of 5,000 V/m at 50 Hz. Covered with EMF foil, 0–1 V/m can be measured above the film as well. The complete measurement: electrosmog: measured values.
Is the infrared radiation of heating film dangerous?
The infrared radiation of heating film is heat radiation: it radiates on the same long wavelength as every warm surface, the human body included, with no ultraviolet component, and in normal heating use we know of no health-damaging effect arising from it. The electric field strength on a covered floor is a fraction of the public exposure limit, and 0 V/m at 20 cm height. More: Is infrared heating harmful?
Doesn't heating film stir up dust?
Heating film does not stir up dust, because it does not heat the air, so there is no air flow in the room that would stir up dust, and it does not dry the air out either. That is why it is often chosen for allergic or asthmatic family members; it is not a cure and does not remove the cause of the allergy. More: infrared heating for allergy sufferers.
Does heating film dry out the air?
Heating film does not dry out the air the way high-temperature, air-heating systems do, because it warms surfaces and objects rather than the air. It creates no air movement either, so it does not stir up dust. Thanks to the warm floor, walls and furniture, the same sense of warmth arises at a lower air temperature. Myths: myths about infrared heating.
Is heating film a fire hazard?
Professionally installed heating film sits behind the floor covering, concrete or plasterboard, is not exposed to damage, and has no open flame or combustion products. It has IP67 insulation, we fit it with an earthing mesh, a thermostat limits the highest surface temperature, and self-regulating film reduces its power in the covered part. Safety depends on the installation: our installers must check more than 100 points. Steps: how we install heating film.
Is heating film waterproof, and is it safe?
Heating film has IP67 insulation, so with the right layer build it can also be installed in a bathroom and other wet rooms, and we always fit it with an earthing mesh. Once installed it sits behind the floor covering or plasterboard, not exposed to damage; at installation we measure and record every section, and with the sensor on the film the highest surface temperature can be limited with a thermostat. Bathroom layer build: electric underfloor heating.
Can heating film be installed in a child's room?
Heating film can be installed in a child's room as well: the 273 V/m measured under a 2 cm Rigidur board is far below the 5,000 V/m public limit, and at 20 cm height we measured 0 V/m. There is no hot surface, sharp corner or open flame in the room. If you want an even lower value at the floor surface, we install the heating with EMF foil, so 0–1 V/m can be measured above the film. Measurement: electrosmog: measured values.
Does heating film help against mould?
At several of our customers, damp, mouldy walls dried out after heating-film heating: the heating raises the wall's surface temperature, the dew point moves further into the wall structure, moisture does not condense on the surface, and so the mould's breeding ground disappears. For a damp, mouldy wall, wall heating is the obvious solution. Experience and layer build: infrared wall heating.
How much does it cost, how much does it use?
What will my electricity bill be with heating film?
The electricity bill of heating-film heating is determined by the building's heat loss and floor area: according to the planned data for our customers' ten houses, 26–75 kWh of electricity per square metre per year is used, and for a new 121 m² house that is 4,530 kWh a year. In September 2026, electricity is HUF 36.4/kWh up to 2,523 kWh a year and HUF 70.1/kWh above. For an estimate: consumption guide.
What is the monthly cost of heating-film heating?
For a medium-insulated 100 m² house, according to our calculation (from the planned values of our case studies, 50.5 kWh/m²/year), the cost at the above-allowance price is about HUF 354,300 a year; most falls in January, about 1,060 kWh, i.e. about HUF 74,400. What falls within the discounted residential allowance costs about half as much. This is an example calculated from planned values, not measured data: expected consumption of ten houses.
How much electricity does 1 m² of heating film draw?
At full power one square metre of heating film draws 0.11 kWh of electricity per hour in the 110 W/m² version and 0.22 kWh in the 220 W/m² version. The thermostat switches it off when the set temperature is reached, so annual consumption is not a simple product of power and hours: it is given by the building's heat loss. Measuring: how to calculate accurately.
How much does the heating-film system cost per square metre?
The complete heating-film system costs HUF 11,250 per m² (Lite), HUF 14,625 per m² (Standard) or HUF 18,000 per m² (Premium), gross, for the area to be heated, installation included; for 100 m², that is HUF 1,125,000–1,800,000. This is a guide order of magnitude; we give the exact price after an on-site survey, and the floor covering and the formation of junction and thermostat boxes are not part of the price. Price and installation: heating film across Hungary.
Is there a separate labour charge for installing heating film?
With us there is no separate labour charge: the price per square metre of the heating-film system, HUF 11,250, 14,625 or 18,000 per m² gross for the area to be heated, already includes installation. The floor covering, the formation of junction and thermostat boxes and the protective-earthing inspection are not part of the price. We give the exact price after an on-site survey. Price: heating film across Hungary.
Is heating film cheaper than gas heating?
1 kWh of heat from heating film is cheaper than from gas only if the household's gas consumption exceeds the discounted band (1,729 m³ a year): above the band, heat from gas is HUF 77.7–80.3/kWh, against HUF 70.1/kWh for above-allowance electricity. Within the discounted band gas is cheaper: with a condensing boiler 1 kWh of heat costs HUF 10.6–11.0, with heating film HUF 36.4. With heating film, however, there is no gas connection, chimney or maintenance cost. Details: consumption and cost.
Is it worth combining heating film with solar panels?
Heating film can be combined with solar panels, and solar panels can reduce the electricity cost of heating, but they do not make it free. Since 1 January 2024, new household solar systems in Hungary are on gross billing; net-metering billing remains only for systems applied for by September 2023 and commissioned by 1 January 2026 at the latest, for at most 10 years. More: Solar-powered heating: myth or real saving?
Does heating film need maintenance?
Heating film needs no maintenance, because it has no moving part, pump, combustion chamber or chimney, so there is no mandatory annual inspection or chimney sweeping. The running cost of the system is therefore the electricity consumption. At installation we measure and record every section, and after connection a protective-earthing record is made. Honestly about the limits: the disadvantages of infrared heating.
What are the disadvantages of heating film?
The main disadvantages of heating-film heating: it does not make hot water and does not cool; with poor insulation, like any heating, it is expensive; and a larger electrical connection may be needed (typically three-phase above 20 m² of film). In Hungary the household's total consumption counts toward the discounted residential electricity allowance. Under vinyl, carpet and tiles a solid layer is needed, and furniture must not cover a heated wall surface. Honestly: the disadvantages of infrared heating.
Can heating film be used for cooling in summer?
Heating film cannot cool in summer, because it is suitable only for heating; for summer cooling you need air conditioning alongside it. The better insulated the building, the lower the cooling demand. The two systems complement each other well: in winter the heating film provides even, radiant base heating, and in summer the air conditioner cools. How: heating film and air conditioning together.
How can you order, and what can you expect?
What is the process for ordering heating film?
Ordering heating film starts with a quote request on the website or in person at the showroom; after the on-site survey we prepare the technical proposal, conclude the contract, and give a preparation list of what must be done before installation. After installation we help the floor layers, and we also come back for a check measurement. Quote request: quote request form.
What do I get after the on-site survey?
After the on-site survey you receive a technical proposal and an itemised quote: room by room the type and quantity of film and the controls, with an exact amount, and the expected annual running cost together with the assumptions of the calculation. After the contract we give a preparation list of what must be done before installation, and agree the date of the installation. The process: how we install heating film.
How can heating-film heating be controlled?
Heating-film heating can be controlled room by room with a thermostat or a smart-home system, so a different temperature can be set in every room, with a WiFi thermostat also from your phone and with a time schedule. With underfloor heating two sensors work in a room: one monitors the air temperature, the other the floor temperature, so the floor temperature permitted by the floor covering's manufacturer is not exceeded either. Thermostats: thermostat for electric heating.
Where do you take on heating-film installation?
We take on the survey and installation of heating-film heating across the whole of Hungary; since 2012 we have carried out more than 5,000 installations. The conditions of delivery and the exact price are recorded in the quote. Details: heating film across Hungary.
Where can I see heating film in operation?
You can see heating film in operation at the Budapest showroom (Rákóczi u. 4, 1039 Budapest), Monday to Friday between 10:00 and 17:00: you can pick up the 4th-generation film and see it switched on with a thermal camera. The heating can also be tried in Mohács, at the showroom of Fűtőfólia Standard, and in Csorna at a customer's, Hanyi Vadászbolt (Arany János utca 7), during the shop's opening hours. We have installation reports with photographs for floor, ceiling and wall heating, and for supplementary and special heating, and you can read our customers' reviews too. A selection: our references, infrared heating reviews.
Where can I report it if the heating is not working properly?
You can report a fault in heating-film heating on the fault-report page, using the online form: give the address of the installation, who carried out the work, and describe what you are seeing; a photo of the thermostat's display helps a lot. It is worth checking the common faults first, because most come down to the thermostat's settings, for example after a power cut. Form: fault report (Hungarian-language form).
Does Fűtőfólia run training for professionals?
Fűtőfólia runs continuing training on infrared heating for building energy specialists, building designers, installers and electricians, so that professionals also know the differences between the various infrared heating systems and correct installation.
