But Is Electric Heating Really Environmentally Friendly?

Author: Tóth Tamás · 4 min read

Locally, electric heating is clean: no combustion, smoke or chimney. Its total environmental impact, however, depends on the source of the electricity. We look at the renewable share in Hungary, efficiency, and what makes electric heating greener.

But Is Electric Heating Really Environmentally Friendly?

Electric heating is environmentally friendly locally: nothing burns in the house, and there is no smoke, chimney or local carbon dioxide emission. Its total environmental impact, however, depends on the source from which the electricity is produced. The greater the share of renewable and low-emission sources in electricity generation, and the better insulated the house, the greener electric heating is – so it cannot be called fully environmentally friendly.

The article appeared in 2022. We have reviewed its claims: what we could not support with a credible source we removed or made more precise, and we added fresh data on the Hungarian energy mix.

Environmentally friendly electric heating

On site: no combustion, no smoke

A gas, wood or coal boiler burns its fuel in the house: carbon dioxide and other combustion products are formed, which have to be released outdoors through a chimney or flue. With solid fuel, smoke and soot are added, which can cause blockages and in extreme cases a chimney fire. Electric heating produces warmth without combustion, by converting electricity into heat, so no combustion products arise in the living space or around the house – which is good for the air in the home and the immediate surroundings too.

Many households use portable electric heaters to heat individual rooms. Their capacity is smaller, but they are still useful in smaller rooms; for heating a whole house a built-in system – a panel heater, an infrared panel or heating film – is the right choice.

At the power station: where does the electricity come from?

Electricity is produced in power stations, and there – depending on the source – emissions can arise. Solar, wind and hydro plants, as well as nuclear plants, emit hardly any carbon dioxide during operation, whereas natural gas and coal plants emit a significant amount. The total environmental balance of electric heating therefore depends on the energy mix of the country, and this has changed noticeably in recent years.

According to Eurostat data, the share of renewable energy in gross electricity consumption in Hungary was 15.3% in 2022 and already 24.1% in 2024. As this share grows, the indirect emissions of the same amount of electric heating fall. Those who produce part of their electricity with their own solar panels can also raise the renewable share in their own consumption – in the winter months, however, the larger part of the heating electricity still comes from the grid.

Efficiency: the electricity drawn is almost entirely converted to heat

Direct electric heaters – panel heaters, infrared panels, heating film – convert almost 99% of the energy they draw into heat in the room, without distribution pipe or flue gas losses. This is the efficiency of the device, not of the whole energy chain: losses also arise in the power station and on the grid when electricity is produced and transmitted.

An important difference is that heating film and infrared panels are not heat pumps. A heat pump also uses the heat of the environment – air, ground, water – so for the same amount of heat it consumes far less electricity than an infrared panel or an electric radiator. Direct electric heating is strong where simplicity of installation, room-by-room control and freedom from maintenance matter.

The greenest energy is the energy we do not use

With any heating, the biggest environmental factor is the heat loss of the house: what the walls, windows and roof let out has to be replaced. Electric heating helps with this in two ways:

  • Precise control. Many systems work with a timer built into the thermostat, hold the optimal temperature room by room, and heat only where and when needed. Details: thermostat.
  • Radiant heat under the floor. Heating film built under the floor gives off heat over a large surface at a low temperature; together with precise thermostatic control, this helps the energy used truly go to heating the room.

If the room is comfortable, setting the temperature a degree or so lower also reduces consumption. How much electricity a house with infrared heating uses is shown in our article on the consumption of infrared heating, and you can read about more sustainable, more economical energy use in a separate piece.

Little maintenance

The maintenance need of electric heating is small: there is no boiler, burner head, chimney or water pipe system, so the annual boiler service disappears. The development of heating film is also covered by our page on 3rd-generation heating film – today we install 4th-generation heating film. We give a 15.5-year warranty on 4th-generation heating film if we do the installation (in Hungary).

In summary: how green is electric heating?

  • There is no combustion or emission in the house – in this, electric heating is clearly cleaner than gas or solid fuel heating.
  • The total emission depends on the source of the electricity; the renewable share in Hungary is growing, but electricity production is still far from fully renewable.
  • With good insulation, precise control and your own solar panels, the environmental impact can be reduced further.

From the point of view of renewable and fossil energy, we compare gas and electric heating in four arguments. We discuss heating methods in general on our electric heating page and in our criterion-by-criterion comparison.
