Digital Thermostat Floor Sensor Setup

Author: Tóth Tamás · 3 min read

A video guide for infrared underfloor heating: how to open the digital thermostat's service menu, how to choose between the In, OUr and All sensor modes, and how to set the floor sensor maximum for laminate flooring and concrete.

Digital Thermostat Floor Sensor Setup

On infrared underfloor heating, the floor sensor of a digital thermostat must be set so that the thermostat monitors both the air temperature and the maximum floor temperature: in a normal installation, choose the "All" sensor mode in the service menu, then adjust the upper limit of the floor sensor to suit the floor covering. Both comfort and consumption depend on the correct setting.

The digital thermostats used with infrared heating work by combining the control of 2 temperature sensors. Besides the air temperature, the maximum value for the floor (with ceiling heating, the ceiling) must also be set. In the video below we show the setting, and underneath we summarise it in writing so that you can check and set it yourself.

Opening the service menu

The steps apply to the thermostat shown in the video; on other models the buttons and menu items may differ - this is described in the product's user manual (Hungarian-language).

  1. The thermostat should be switched off.
  2. Press the power button and the book button at the same time - this brings up the service settings.
  3. Among the options in the service menu, you can page through with the book button and change values with the up and down arrows.

Which sensor should the thermostat control by?

In the first menu item you specify which sensor the thermostat uses:

  • "In": only the temperature sensor built into the thermostat. With infrared heating this is not acceptable under any circumstances; do not use this setting.
  • "OUr": only the external temperature sensor connected to the thermostat, that is, the floor sensor.
  • "All": the internal and the external sensor at the same time.

In a normal installation - whether the heating is in the floor or on the ceiling - it should always be set to "All".

"OUr" can be used in one case: if you operate the underfloor heating as supplementary heating (for example alongside a fireplace or other heating) and the aim is for the floor to be evenly, comfortably warm. In that case only the floor temperature matters, not the air temperature.

The maximum temperature of the floor sensor

Paging on with the book button, you see the value above which the floor sensor must not get warmer. Before setting it, check where the heating has been installed and what floor covering is above it.

  • Laminate flooring over the heating: check in the flooring's warranty conditions what temperature is permitted beneath it. Set the desired value to match, for example 24 degrees.
  • Heating embedded in concrete: here the value can be much higher, even 35 degrees, because the thermostat's probe is above the film, with a further 4-5 cm of concrete above that. The temperature of the film is therefore not equal to the temperature measurable at the top layer of the floor.

Saving and fine-tuning

When you have finished the setting, switch the thermostat off and then on again - from then on it operates with the set values.

If in use you feel it is not warm enough, for example the flooring is too cold, you can fine-tune with the same settings until it best suits your own comfort. If the home is warm but the floor stays cold, we have a separate video article on that; how to make the thermostat show the real temperature is explained in our article on calibration.
