Workshop Heating Solutions

What should you heat a workshop with? A plug-in infrared panel for occasional DIY, built-in heating film for everyday work, a dark radiant heater for larger, high workshops – advantages, limits and a decision table.

Workshop Heating Solutions

Workshop heating should be matched to how the workshop is used. For occasional DIY a plug-in infrared panel is enough: the warmth is felt within seconds, and it only needs to run while you are inside. If most of your work happens in the workshop, heating film built into the floor or ceiling is the more comfortable, permanent solution, and in a larger, taller workshop a dark radiant heater may also be an option.

Work cannot stop in winter either, and there are many tasks that cannot be done in a heated office. As Christmas approaches, many people also feel the urge to tinker – but the thought of having to go out to the freezing workshop often kills the mood. Nobody likes to stand at the workbench without heating.

Heating in the workshop

For occasional use: infrared panel

For a garden or home workshop, the simplest solution is an infrared panel. Putting portable panels into operation needs no expertise: you plug it into the socket and it works.

  • Fast: radiant heat is felt a few seconds after switching on. There is no need to wait for the air to warm up, and no need to light it like a boiler.
  • Uses energy only while in use: since it gives heat immediately, it is enough to switch it on for the time you spend in the workshop – this is what makes it economical.
  • Does not stir up dust: an infrared panel heats without air movement. This is especially useful with drilling, carving and sanding, since these jobs create a lot of dust anyway, and nobody wants the dust to be swirling around as well. We wrote more about airborne dust in this article.

For everyday work: heating film

If you do most of your work in your home workshop, built-in heating film is the more comfortable choice. The advantages of infrared heating – quick warmth and air-movement-free, dust-free operation – apply here too; the difference is that the film is built into the floor or the ceiling. So there is no visible heater getting in the way next to the workbench, shelves or machines.

  • In the room you want, we can build a heating-film system in as little as 1 day.
  • The whole heating system is 6 mm thick; for underfloor heating you will find the exact layer structures on our underfloor heating page.
  • The heating is controlled by a thermostat that can even be operated remotely – you can switch it on before setting off, so it is warm by the time you arrive.

How installing heating film in a given workshop compares with other heating methods depends on the size, the insulation and the way it is used; we can calculate this exactly once we know the site.

For a larger, taller workshop: dark radiant heater

Dark radiant heater for workshop heating

Dark radiant heaters are increasingly common in workshop heating. They too pass heat to objects and people by radiation, without first warming the air: warmth is felt quickly, and less heat is lost under the roof, which is an advantage in frequently changing working conditions. Thanks to their small space requirement they also fit well into workshops of limited area.

Dark radiant heaters have limits too, which are worth thinking through before deciding:

  • the initial investment cost can be higher than with other heating solutions;
  • in a larger workshop with variable heat demand, temperature control can be more complicated;
  • efficiency depends heavily on the characteristics of the room, such as ceiling height and insulation quality;
  • installation must also comply with safety rules, especially fire and accident prevention regulations.

Which should you choose?

The situation in a garage is similar, but there the car is also a consideration – we wrote about this in our article on garage heating. For a large industrial hall, our hall heating in Jászberény is an example.
