Heating Film in an Industrial Environment: Hall Heating in Jászberény
Author: Tóth Tamás · 4 min read
How can a large-volume industrial hall be heated economically? In our Jászberény project, heating film built into the concrete floor warms the workers, not the air space, and the large floor area was divided into separately controlled zones.
Yes, heating film is also suitable for heating an industrial hall: the radiant heat of film built into the floor warms the people working there and the objects directly, so there is no need to heat the entire air volume of a tall hall. In the Jászberény Industrial Park, in a hall of several thousand square metres with a ceiling height of 5.5-6 metres, we created underfloor heating this way, and divided the large floor area into several separately controllable heating zones.
Why is heating a hall a difficult task?
Halls, workshops and warehouses typically have large floor areas and high ceilings. Heating that warms the air consumes a lot of energy here: the warm air rises under the ceiling, where nobody works, and part of it escapes whenever a door is opened. Choosing the heating system is therefore not only about the comfort of the working environment but also about running costs and energy efficiency.
Infrared heating works differently: radiant heat first warms objects and people, and only afterwards the air. The sensation of warmth therefore develops quickly where the work is going on, and a more pleasant working environment can also help the work itself.
What can heating film do in an industrial environment?
- Quick installation. Installation is quick and involves a relatively low cost.
- Resistant. The film goes into the floor structure and withstands the demands of an industrial environment.
- Precise, remote control. It is easy to control remotely and holds the set temperature to the degree.
- Dry walls. Radiant heating keeps walls dry, which reduces the chance of mould - this can be an advantage in the food industry, for example.
- Takes up no space. After installation it is not visible, so it does not get in the way of placing machines, shelving and material handling.
- Efficient operation. Because it warms the area in use and the workers, not the whole air volume, running it can be economical.
Combined with a solar system, part of the heating's electricity demand can be covered by your own generation. It is worth calculating realistically, though: solar panels produce the least in winter, at the peak of the heating season, and how much the generated electricity reduces the bill is decided by how generation and consumption coincide in time, and by the billing rules applying to the system. Our article on solar heating covers this in detail.
Hall heating with heating film in Jászberény
One of the big projects of 2023 was creating the heating for a hall in the Jászberény Industrial Park with intelligent heating film. The work showed that the product and our installation team are also suited to large-scale industrial projects.
The hall has a ceiling height of 5.5-6 metres and a floor area of several thousand square metres - a huge air space. That is why we chose heating film underfloor heating: the film heats through 15 cm of concrete, the warmth reaches the people working there directly from the floor, so the huge air space of the hall does not have to be heated. Compared with heating the air space, this means a significant saving. The video below shows the installation in Jászberény.
Zone heating: it heats only where needed
The essence of zone heating is that the heating system is divided into several separate zones, each with its own thermostat and controller. This way different parts of the hall - or different areas of one room - can be set to different temperatures. This is useful where the heat demand of areas differs: a rarely used storage section can stay cooler than the strip where work is continuous.
The biggest advantage of zone heating is energy efficiency: because we heat only the necessary areas, energy use falls, and with it the cost. Comfort improves too, because the temperature can be adapted to the needs of users. In Jászberény we installed smart home control and divided the large floor area into several heating zones, so that the hall could be heated more economically.
