Heating Film for the Warmth of Hunting Lodges: The Advantages of Infrared Heating

A hunting lodge that is not permanently inhabited is best heated with heating that gives warmth quickly, can be switched on remotely, and needs no attention in periods of non-use. That is why we recommend electric infrared heating: the heating film is built into the floor or ceiling, needs no pipework, chimney or fuel, and with a Wi-Fi thermostat it can be started before you arrive.

How is heating a hunting lodge different?

Hunting lodges, as properties that are not permanently inhabited, pose a particular heating task. A warm, homely environment is needed in the cold months, yet the heating must also be economical and sustainable. Three considerations are worth looking at together:

• Variable demand: since the house is not a permanent residence, heating demand differs greatly from period to period.
• Limited infrastructure: because of where hunting lodges are located, using gas is often not feasible, so electricity is the obvious alternative.
• Cost and sustainability: an energy-saving solution is needed that consumes only when it is really needed.

Why electric heating?

The biggest advantage of electric heating is flexibility and simple installation. The heating elements can be built into the floor or ceiling, no complicated pipework or chimney system is needed, and the maintenance need is minimal, which reduces both costs and operating chores. Electric systems are easy to control: the owner can set the desired temperature remotely, so the heating consumes energy only when necessary.

What does infrared heating add?

Infrared heating does not primarily warm the air but radiates heat directly onto objects and people. In a cooled-down hunting lodge this is useful because those inside feel the warmth soon, with no need to wait until the whole volume of air has warmed up. Radiant heat also warms the walls and the furnishings, which can help against mould on cold, damp surfaces, and since it does not move the air, it does not stir up dust either.

Cost and sustainability

Infrared heating is not only comfortable, it can also help with heating costs: you need to heat only during use, and because radiant heat warms surfaces, the feeling of warmth is pleasant even at a lower air temperature. If the electricity of the house is partly covered from a renewable source, such as solar panels, the environmental load of the heating falls further. Practical considerations for planning

• Sizing: the output of the system must be matched to the heating demand of the property, so that it gives enough warmth but does not cause needlessly high energy consumption.
• Remote control: with a Wi-Fi thermostat the owner can check and adjust the heating remotely: switch it on before arriving, and turn it back after leaving.
• When not in use: set to a lower temperature during empty periods, the house does not cool down completely, so it becomes comfortable faster on arrival.
