Renovating an Old House

When renovating the entire ground floor of an old house, the owners were looking for underfloor heating that needs no major intervention - that is how electric underfloor heating was chosen. The house, with 75 m² of living area, received heating with an output of 4.8 kW and thermostat control, and the existing fireplace remained as supplementary heating.

What the family highlights

The family is very satisfied: they find the system modern and economical, and comfortable in everyday life. As the biggest advantage they mention the pleasantly warm floor under their feet in the morning.

Parameters

  • Living area of the house: 75 m²
  • Installed output: 4.8 kW
  • Heat loss: 80 W/m²
  • Expected electricity consumption: 3,740 kWh (a design estimate, not a measured value)
  • Control: thermostat
  • Supplementary heating: fireplace

In an old house renovated afterwards, heat loss is typically greater than in a new building today - which is why it is important that the sizing of the heating starts from the house's actual data. How heat loss, installed output and expected consumption are connected is explained in detail in our New house reference; the factors affecting consumption are covered on our consumption page.

Why is electric underfloor heating good for a renovation?

Compared with a water-based system, no boiler, pipe network or manifold is needed, and electric heating elements - for example heating film - fit in the floor even in a thin layer. The differences between the two solutions are described in our comparison of water-based and electric underfloor heating, and the role of insulation in the article on underfloor heating insulation. General information is on the underfloor heating page.
