Case study: underfloor heating film in a 190 m² new house of a master builder, 14.5 kW installed output and a wifi thermostat. Consumption in the first heating season matched the estimated annual value.

New House

We built underfloor heating with heating film into a new family house with 190 m² of living space, with 14.5 kW installed output and wifi thermostat control. The owner is a master builder who wanted underfloor heating, but not water-based. In the first heating season – when consumption is generally higher because the new building is drying out – the electricity consumption of the heating matched the estimated annual consumption.

Why did a master builder choose heating film?

The owner has a lot of experience in building houses. He definitely wanted underfloor heating, but not the traditional, hot-water system, so he looked for an alternative – this is how infrared heating came into the picture. He compared the offers of several heating film suppliers and chose our product. The main reason for the decision at the time, in 2022, was the properties and quality of the 3rd-generation heating film; today we install 4th-generation heating film.

Installation went quickly and smoothly. The couple has loved the pleasant warmth ever since: after moving in, the wife said this was the first house where it is really warm. As the biggest advantage, both highlight economical operation.

Data of the house and the heating

ParameterValue
Living area of the house190 m²
Installed output14.5 kW
Heat loss40 W/m²
Expected electricity consumption7,305 kWh
Controlwifi thermostat

How do we read these numbers?

  • Heat loss: shows how much heat the building loses per square metre. It depends on the insulation and the windows and doors of the building, and the sizing of the heating starts from it.
  • Installed output: the total output of the heating film installed in the house. It is not the same as consumption: the thermostat switches the heating on only as long as the set temperature has to be held.
  • Expected electricity consumption: the annual heating energy demand estimated at the design stage. In this house even the measured consumption of the first season came to this value.
  • Control: the wifi thermostat regulates the heating to the set temperature, and can be adjusted remotely too.

Why is consumption in the first heating season usually higher?

In a newly built house there is still construction moisture in the walls, the substrate and the plaster. In the first heating season part of this evaporates, which needs extra energy, so the first-year heating consumption of new buildings is typically higher than later. In this house consumption did not exceed the estimated annual value even in this period.
