Infrared heating panel: what size, how much power?

Room size, ceiling height, insulation, exterior walls and windows all affect how much heat a room needs. Here are the rules of thumb we use for infrared panels and their expected consumption.

In brief

  • The power of an infrared panel must be chosen to match the room's volume.
  • A Fenix EcoSun U+ 1000 W panel heats 32–38 m³ according to the manufacturer, depending on insulation.
  • The number of exterior walls and windows also raises the room's heat demand.
  • An infrared panel uses at most its rated power per hour.
Sizing

How many infrared panels, and how large?

Do the calculation room by room. With a lower ceiling it is better to use several smaller panels than one large one. The calculator on the Hungarian-language page also shows the room's heat demand as a cross-check; the rules below come from the same data.

  • A Fenix EcoSun U+ 1000 W panel heats 32–38 m³ according to the manufacturer, depending on insulation.
  • Exterior walls and windows increase the heat demand: 2 exterior walls ×1.14, 3 exterior walls ×1.4, 4 exterior walls ×1.67, single-glazed windows ×1.15.
Frequently asked questions

Questions about sizing

What size infrared panel does a 12 m² room need?

A 12 m² room with a 2.6 m ceiling has a volume of 31.2 m³; according to the Fenix EcoSun U+ manufacturer data, one 1000 W panel is enough for this with medium or good insulation. The calculator also shows the heat demand based on exterior walls and windows, as a cross-check.

How much power does an infrared panel use?

At full load an infrared panel uses its rated power per hour: a 1000 W panel uses 1 kWh. The thermostat switches it off when the set temperature is reached; for primary heating, the calculator estimates annual consumption from the planned values of the company's case studies.

Where do the exterior wall and window multipliers come from?

From our earlier calculator: 2 exterior walls mean 1.14 times, 3 exterior walls 1.4 times, 4 exterior walls 1.67 times, and single-glazed windows 1.15 times the heat demand. These are the company's empirical values; the base heat demand per volume of air now comes from the design heat loss in the company's case studies.
