How Suitable Is Infrared Church Heating?
Author: Tóth Tamás · 3 min read
Infrared heating suits a church well: it warms the pews and the congregation, not the huge volume of air, almost instantly. Infrared panels between the pews, heating film under the floor – and the same for homes with high ceilings.
Infrared heating is well suited to heating a church, because it does not have to warm the huge volume of air but directly the pews, the walls and the congregation. Since a church is typically heated only for the time of services, it is important that warmth is felt quickly: infrared panels heat almost instantly, and heating film hidden under the floor does not change the look of the church.
Heating buildings with high ceilings in winter is expensive, and the large volume of a church could be heated in the traditional way only at a very high cost. Nor is it acceptable for the congregation to spend hours in the cold – and the solution is not a blanket but infrared church heating.

Why is heating a church different?
A church does not have to be kept warm all the time. In most cases the heating is run for the time of the services – masses, baptisms, weddings – and these last no more than a few hours, so there is no point in heating for longer. With conventional heating that warms the air, however, such a large volume cannot be heated in a short time: the heating would have to be started many hours before the service.

Because of the characteristics of infrared heating, it is enough to switch on the electric infrared panels 10 minutes before the congregation arrives, since they give noticeable warmth almost immediately. The panels are most often placed between the pews; low-surface-temperature infrared panels are the most suitable for this. Those sitting in the pew feel the pleasant warmth from very close, so time spent in the cool church is also comfortable.
With proper planning and installation, the aesthetics of the church do not change either, because the heating elements can be placed almost invisibly and functionally. As in a residential house, heating film can also go under the floor of a church. In a short time it warms the pews, the walls and the people there in a targeted way, so the operator can save energy and time.

A completed example, the heated pews of the parish church in Makó, is presented in our article Infrared heating in the church, no shivering at mass.
Not only for churches
High ceilings are characteristic not only of churches but of many institutions: museums, theatres and other cultural buildings. In middle-class flats built in the last century a ceiling height of 3–4 metres is also common. Anyone who lives in such a flat knows how much energy and money the heating season takes, especially if the windows and doors do not insulate well either.
If comfortable warmth can be created with infrared heating in the large space of a church, the right temperature can also be achieved in homes with high ceilings, gallery houses and institutions – with infrared heating panels or heating film.
