Electrical Engineer Tibor Kiss's Experience with Smart Heating Film

Electrical engineer Tibor Kiss was looking for a solution for his daughter's mouldy flat, and had heating film fitted behind the furniture, facing the mouldy wall. According to his experience, the mould disappeared completely, and in the two years up to the time this article appeared it did not return. The explanation is building physics: moisture does not condense on a warmer wall surface.

How did he get to heating film?

Tibor Kiss first tried the solution: he ordered the book "A Nap melege az Ön otthonában" (The Warmth of the Sun in Your Home; Hungarian-language book), which at the time came with a free sample of smart heating film. The family liked the trial very much, so heating film was built into his daughter's flat – two years before this article appeared (2020). The film went behind the furniture, facing the mouldy wall.

Why can the mould disappear?

Mould appears where the inner surface of the wall cools so much that the moisture of the air condenses on it and the wall stays damp for a long time. Infrared heating also warms the wall by radiation, so its surface becomes warmer, the dew point moves further out within the wall structure, and no moisture forms on the surface – so the mould loses its breeding ground. This is what happened in Tibor Kiss's daughter's flat.

Important: mould can have other causes too (leaks, rising damp, insufficient ventilation), which heating does not solve. We wrote about the causes of a mouldy wall in our article on mouldy walls, and about heating rooms prone to condensation in our article on infrared heating in the bathroom.

What is worth remembering?

  • Heating film does not have to go only in the floor or ceiling: it can also be aimed specifically at a cold, mould-prone wall.
  • The solution is one engineer's own experience over two years in one flat – it is always worth finding the cause of the mould first.
  • You can read about heating film usable for wall and ceiling heating, and about infrared panels, on the infrared panel page.

If your flat is in a similar situation, request a technical proposal: from the room's data we will tell you where and how large a heated surface would be needed. Installation is available in Hungary.
