Terrace Heating – Enjoy Every Part of Your Home, Winter and Summer!
Author: Tóth Tamás · 3 min read
On a covered, enclosed terrace, heating film built under the floor covering warms invisibly and silently; for an open terrace, a dark radiant heater is the thing. Five considerations for built-in terrace heating: look, operation, efficiency, sizing, safety.
To use your terrace comfortably in winter and summer, the heating should fit the design of the terrace: on a covered, enclosed or glazed terrace, heating film built under the floor covering warms invisibly, silently and evenly, whereas for an open terrace without a roof, a dark radiant heater mounted on the wall or ceiling is the better choice.
Terrace heating makes it possible to use the outdoor parts around your home for the comfort of family and friends even in cold or rainy weather. Running traditional terrace heaters is often costly and can carry safety risks; with the development of technology, however, more efficient solutions are available, such as heating film. Since the article was published in 2023, heating film has also developed further: today we install 4th-generation heating film.

5 considerations in favour of built-in terrace heating
With terrace heating, both economical operation and appearance are important. The considerations below show how heating film built under the floor covering differs from traditional terrace heaters.
1. Look
Heating film installed under the floor is not visible, so it does not disturb the design of the terrace. Its operation is quiet and odourless, because there is no combustion to give sound or smell. Under the covering it is protected from the vagaries of the weather, so it faces fewer external influences than freestanding devices.
2. Environmentally gentle operation
Electric heating emits no combustion products on site during use. How environmentally gentle it is overall also depends on the source of the electricity.
3. Efficiency
Heating film gives off heat directly under the terrace covering, so it stays on the surface in use and rises toward the sky less than part of the warmth of freestanding terrace heaters.
4. Sizing
A device of too high an output consumes more energy than needed, so sizing should match the size of the terrace. Heating film is a thin, flexible heating element that goes under the floor or terrace covering; it warms up with electricity and passes heat evenly to the whole surface of the terrace.
5. Professional installation and safety
Heating film should be installed by a qualified installer so that it works properly and safely. Before planning, it is worth clarifying how large an area you want to heat, what temperature you need, and how often you use the terrace – from these the expected energy demand can be estimated. Heating built into the floor or wall cannot be touched by children and pets, so they do not have to be kept away from it as from a freestanding heater.
In summary: heating film or dark radiant heater?
Heating film can be an efficient and economical solution for a covered, enclosed terrace if you want to avoid the running costs and risks of traditional terrace heaters; our reference in Debrecen covers a glazed restaurant terrace used in winter too.
If the terrace has no covered part, or you do not want a built-in solution, a dark radiant heater may be the right choice. It gives no visible light, only infrared radiation; it can be mounted on a wall or ceiling, is also used to heat spaces with high ceilings, and comes in handy in cooler periods too. When it is worth switching it on in summer is covered in our article on summer terrace heating.
